Supreme Court Posts Notice Seeking Applications from Attorneys to Fill Vacancy on the Board of Tax and Land Appeals
The Supreme Court will be accepting applications until October 2, 2023, to fill a vacancy on the Board of Tax and Land Appeals (BTLA). In accordance with RSA 71-B:1 (as amended in 2023), the position with the current vacancy must be occupied by an attorney licensed to practice law in the state of New Hampshire. The term of the position shall be for the unexpired portion of a three-year term ending on December 31, 2023, and for an additional three-year term commencing on January 1, 2024. Members of the BTLA are appointed by the Supreme Court and commissioned by the Governor. RSA 71-B:1 states that members “shall be full-time employees and shall not engage in any other employment during their terms that is in conflict with their duties as members of the board.” The annual compensation for the position is established by RSA RSA 94:1-a.
Candidates should submit, on a confidential basis, a current resume and a separate statement of interest to Timothy A. Gudas, Clerk, New Hampshire Supreme Court, One Charles Doe Drive, Concord, NH 03301. The statement of interest should: (1) explain the candidate’s reasons for seeking appointment to the BTLA; (2) list two professional colleagues and two lay people who could act as a reference concerning the candidate’s fitness to serve as a member of the BTLA; and (3) identify and discuss the two or three most significant cases, transactions, administrative hearings, or projects demonstrating that the candidate is “learned and experienced in questions of taxation or of real estate valuation and appraisal, or both,” as RSA 71-B:1 requires.
